Wu Qin Xi (Five-Animal Play) is a set of health-preserving and fitness exercises compiled by Hua Tuo, a physician of the Eastern Han Dynasty. Drawing on the ancient Daoyin health-preserving techniques, it was created based on the theories of yin-yang and the five elements, visceral manifestations, meridians, and the laws of qi and blood circulation in traditional Chinese medicine, as well as through observing the movement postures of birds and beasts and imitating the forms and movements of five animals—tiger, deer, ape, bear and bird.
